As a voice performer, what was the biggest surprise?

I get asked often, as a voice performer, what was the biggest surprise for me?

When I started doing voiceover, it was because I’m good at accents and dialects.

The first voiceover gig that I had required a Kenyan dialect. It was for a world vision piece. And I’d just been doing a solo show where I had several different accents and dialects. Two of them, one was Kosa, right? That kind of thing, South African and Zulu, which is very emphatic, right? So anyway, I thought maybe I can add to my repertoire and it was so cool to vocally be visibly black, if you will.

It’s part of why when I’m doing dialect coaching, African accents are my favorite ones.

I want to embrace them, but the last DNA results I got, it’s 12 different countries. So if I’m especially able to do any dialect coaching, from any of the African countries that I’m genetically connected to, I’m thrilled.
