Lessons about “Passing” I wish I knew sooner…
A lesson that I learned about ‘passing’ that I wish I’d learned sooner is that it’s not about trying to fit yourself like an ever morphing puzzle piece into whatever situation you’re in. It’s more about just finding out who you are as a person and having standards where you don’t feel afraid to tell somebody, “Listen this is who I am…” “…Accept me as I am.”
That said, we all change a little to be in rapport with other people, right?
Our voices are going to be different.
Say if we’re talking to a small child who’s lost in a supermarket as opposed to somebody who owes us money, right? Our bodies are made mostly of water. So we’re always in flow in flux to a degree, but… There’s a thing with acting where so much of the time as a young actor, there’s an assumption that the casting directors, the director have a perfect idea of who you’re supposed to be in mind. And if I can only psychically figure out who that character is that they have in mind and fit myself into that mold. Maybe I’ll book the role? And that is something that passes through the minds of a lot of mixed people throughout the day. How exhausting is that? That’s a lot of morphing that uses up a lot of energy. Doing that deep self-reflection, starting with values. Working out from there, I think can help keep a person from exhausting themselves by trying to fit in all the time.
