Gin reveals the power of a mentor when you’re growing up mixed

A high schooler who’s talking about this subject casually. I hope that they know that they’re not alone. We all need a place to feel safe, right?

It can feel, for whatever kind of stripe of human you are, there can be an unsafe thing about being that kind of human on that particular day or in that particular place. And that’s something I think we all need to remember so that we can have more compassion for each other.

But, having the courage to reach out to people that seem similar to you.

Also having the courage to reach out to an older mentor because if this is a loving person, they’re probably gonna have some good advice and the more you can create community, just like with any affinity group, right?

Maybe you’re a fan of a particular video game or something like that, then it doesn’t matter. That’s one of the fun things about comic cons People are coming from all walks of life, but they all love this one thing.

If you are a mixed teen, if there’s not already a club in your high school or middle school, maybe that’s something you can even start?

Go ahead and try and find community.

Don’t be shy.

You might get burned, but you’ll heal, keep trying. Once you have that community. I don’t know where I would’ve been without my BFF, who is Jamaican, Chinese and Irish. Just, yes, she’s stunning. Just having somebody to understand me.

One time I dated somebody who was also mixed and passing like me, that was a very special relationship. Yes, it ended after a couple years, but if I had to do it all over again knowing that it would’ve ended, I’d do it all over again, even though it was painful at the end because just to have somebody around who really understood.

It’s priceless, it really is.

I’m Gin Hammond and I’m Living IncogNegro.

I’m glad you’re here and we’re on this journey together.
