So I’m a certified teacher of Fitzmaurice technique voice work, which is a voice modality. That’s taught at all the big schools like NYU and Yale school of drama and internationally too.

One of the things that I’ve found is that a lot of people warm up too much. They’re doing their vocal exercises on the way to their performance.  Maybe for an hour or more.  What they’re doing is  overtaxing their voices before the show even begins.

They do that because they’re trying to regulate their nervous system for the craziness that they’re about to face once they step out on stage or onto the set.

So save a little for the actual performance.

What are some great cool down exercises?

One of the best cool down exercises you can possibly do is straw foundation. It’s used by a lot of singers and what you do is, you get a thin-ish straw, one of those stirring straws at Starbucks, and you blow into the straw, no air on the other side.

You can do it with just air or you can go up and down a siren.

It changes the air pressure above and below the vocal folds so it gets a passive stretch and it really helps your vocal folds and the retinoid cartilage and all that stuff just unwind and calm down.
